Millard Canyon – Dawn Gold Mine found

When you are hiking up Sunset Ridge you need to keep a good eye out for Sunset Trail on your left.  If you miss it for some reason (My party did the first time we were there, don’t ask me how), you will end up walking to Camp Sierra.  There you will find lots of mountain bikers zooming down from Echo Mountain trail and if you head down Sunset you will take alot of switchbacks till you reach Millard Canyon trail.  Head north and you will find the mine. 

We ended up having to turn back before we reached the mine the first time out there due to time restraints on a member of our party.  But we returned 5 days later determined to find the mine.  On this trip, we finally found the Dawn Gold Mine.  It was a fun hike that I would recommend.  Most of the trek is along the riverbed and in the shallow pools you can find salamanders. 

It’s a shame that the recent fires burned up this trail.  We’ll see how long it takes it to recover and hopefully do this hike again someday.
